It was a typical Saturday afternoon for Friends of Amicalola Falls volunteer, Milt Smith, as he hiked to the mid-falls bridge to photograph the falls flow swollen by a night of rain. As Milt made his way to the bridge, he was approached by a young man who asked him to snap a picture of him and his girlfriend. Once Milt pointed his camera and said "smile," young man quickly dropped to his knee, pulled out a diamond ring, and proposed to his companion with the sound of the rushing falls to congratulate the newly engaged.

Friends of Amicalola Falls members are hard at work making a difference for their favorite site. Volunteers are coming from far and wide to lend a hand accomplishing much-needed projects and having a great time in the process. Friends volunteer and Master Gardner, Bob Putman, has volunteered his time and talents pruning and weeding the landscaping at Amicalola Falls.     

Another volunteer, Liz Martin, drove from her Tennessee home to spend time cleaning the offices, creating a brighter atmosphere for the staff. Friends John Thomas and Arliss Brigman repaired the rail fence in the campground and entire teams of Friends volunteers recently worked on trail maintenance, beautifying various areas of the park.

Containing the largest cascading waterfall in the Southeast as well as miles of scenic trails, it is clear why Amicalola Falls is one of Georgia’s most popular state parks. Maintaining their trails as well as providing trails with a wide range of difficulty is important to the Amicalola Falls staff and volunteers which is why, in 2010, the Friends of Amicalola Falls took the initiative to make necessary repairs and improvements to the West Ridge Trail.
