December at Red Top Mountain State Park started off with Christmas cheer as family and Friends gathered at the Cabin for the annual welcoming of Santa and Mrs. Clause. The mild weather and teams of volunteers and re-enactors who demonstrated an "old fashioned" 19th century Christmas celebration was quite the hit.
Women were working hard in the kitchen cooking over the fire with their cast iron cookery, men were outside blacksmithing, period appropriate toys were set up for visiting families to experience the fun and games of Christmases past, and of course Santa and Mrs. Clause welcomed children of all ages with open arms, anxious to hear their deepest wishes and dreams for the holidays. Mrs. Clause even ready some Christmas stories to the children.
Live Christmas music was performed by the Red Top Porch Pickers and a station with candle dipping was set up where families could try their hand at making their own souvenir candles to remember this special day.
Stay tuned for upcoming events. Friends members and park staff are currently busy planning the schedule of events for next year. However, Friends and park staff are ready to welcome you any time and any day of the year.
