July marks the middle of summer vacation and for many kids it is a time to figure out what’s next! After spending hours in the swimming pool or days roaming the neighborhood, it is that time of year where parents begin to hear the all too familiar drone of, “I’m bored,” as the kids roll out of bed and gaze upward with their cocked neck, sleepy eyes, and sun-kissed cheeks. The great news is that Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites are packed with summer opportunities for both the young and young at heart to heal the aliment of summer boredom.

Running from July 11 through the 15 is Camp Reed Bingham where kids ages 9-13 can enjoy this exciting, outdoor kids camp. Park staff and Friends volunteers will host these young campers as they experience canoeing and kayaking adventures, learn how to build camp fires, practice cooking outdoors, study wilderness survival, and find out how to identify various forest critters. This is a wonderful opportunity for kids to experience fun, interactive learning as well as explore their Georgia state parks.

For those who missed out on Junior Ranger Camp happening at various Georgia locations throughout June, Sweetwater Creek State Park is hosting Junior Ranger Day Camp for kids ages six through twelve where these young scouts can earn their Level 1 Deer Badge. Complete with nature hikes, a live animal program, crafts, and a lunch, this day of nature discovery will be a day to remember.

Etowah Indian Mounds Historic Site is hosting their own day of discovery where kids learn from a professional archaeologist about history and archaeology. Everyone will have the opportunity to study real artifacts and take part in a mock excavation.

Perhaps it is the creepy crawly critters that are most exciting for your youngsters. Then Tugaloo State Park’s Snakes Alive program, High Falls State Park’s Frog Slog program, Smithgall Woods State Park’s Youth Fishing Day at Buck Shoals, or Indian Spring’s Mammals, Birds of Prey, Reptiles program will be perfect for them. Many of your Georgia state parks and historic sites are hosting a wide array of activities happening this month near you.

The young at heart have an opportunity of high energy fun as well with the High Falls State Park Couch Potato to 5K Running program. This 9-week program challenges anyone with even the slightest motivation to train for this 3.1 mile run. Although you will not need any prior running experience or training, you do need a pair of running shoes and plenty of water!

For those who desire less rigorous exercise may want to participate in any number of the guided hikes happening at various parks or simply enjoy the Dahlonega Appalachian Jam or Red Top Mountain’s Music Mountain Series.
