Sounds of Summer

Georgia parks and historic sites have much to offer but it is rare that people think of these great places as an opportunity to sit back, relax, and enjoy an evening of music. However, this month several parks and historic sites are hosting music events for the whole family to enjoy. With your Friends membership in one hand and your folding chair in the other, invite a friend or your family to a memorable evening of fun and relaxation.

Chief Vann House Historic Site is hosting the Cherokee National Youth Choir to perform traditional songs in the Cherokee language at the Vann House. This choir of forty young people is traveling from northeastern Oklahoma to share their beautiful talents and culture for all to enjoy.

Perhaps you enjoy Vogel State Park and wish to escape the summer heat at Music in the Park at Lake Trahlyta Pavilion as you enjoy a cool mountain evening of wonderful music. Or, if bluegrass music is your preference, then the Mountain Music Series at Red Top Mountain State Park is the place for you. This evening blue grass concert series at the Vaughan Cabin is not only impressive but relaxing as well. Come early and bring a friend and your instrument for a jamming session before the evening festivities begin!

If it is listening and playing that you enjoy the most, then the Appalachian Jam series at the Dahlonega Gold Museum Historic Site is perfect for you. Mountain music pickers and singers flock to this extraordinary afternoon of entertaining music. Tour the museum then come to the courtyard to play or just listen and enjoy this unique afternoon of sound.

Maybe learning to play an instrument is your dream but you have never had the opportunity. Mistletoe State Park is hosting a Mountain Dulcimer Workshop. Come have fun learning to play this beautiful folk instrument with free, hands-on instructions from members of the Garden City Strummers Dulcimer Club. If you already play, then meet at the Nature Center and join in on the jam session. Listeners are always welcome if playing is not your preference.

Friends members will enjoy free parking with their park passes. Some events have minimal fees and donations for these generous music groups are always welcome. For more information about these exciting music events, including their dates, times, and if there is a minimal fee, Click Here.
