September in the Parks

Summer is closing and signs of autumn are approaching. As the temperature changes and precipitation fluctuates, the hints of color continually tease the anxious eye. It's not only the leaves on the trees, but behaviors of the animals in our parks that become so noticeable. Whether you are anxious to enjoy the fall foliage or the pleasant temperatures, Georgia state parks and historic sites are truly a favorite destination for many during the autumn months.

October 1 begins Leaf Watch, but even before that, parks are planning special events to take advantage of the beauty of the outdoors. Tallulah Gorge is hosting a Bird Watching event to not only educate visitors about the area birds, but to observe their excitement and energy as they prepare for the coming winter months. Panola Mountain is having Wildflower Hikes and Cloudland Canyon is hosting Wild Cave Adventures!  Other parks are hosting a variety of programs, such as nature hikes, kayaking tours, and a range of other exciting events.

Join Friends of Red Top for their annual Harvest Time at the Homestead living history event. Visitors come to discover what life was like for the 19th century pioneers. This event is more than a re-enactment, but a hands-on living history where visitors can take part in the activities, crafts, games and competitions throughout the weekend.

And don't forget Your State Parks day on September 29! This is a free admissions day to particiapting Georgia state parks and historic sites, welcoming guests to get outdoors and enjoy our great parks. In conjuction with National Public Lands Day, this free day is also a day of service at our great parks to encourage volunteerism and stewardship for our state's great resources.
