Formed in 2012, the local Friends chapter at Fort Mountain State Park was created to support the park through promotion and volunteerism efforts. Friends' partnership with site staff allows for the volunteers to support and fund site needs during this time of great needs and challenges.

All in all, this Friends chapter has had a successful year supporting the park with various projects. Some projects have included supporting the site maintenance and repair through purchasing equipment and assisting with repair projects.  In addition, Friends purchased office equipment to help meet operational needs.

Programming and events is also a priority for these Friends volunteers as they helped with the Black Bear Plunge, Glow in the Dark Easter Egg Hunt, Pot O'Gold, National Kids Day and other events.

Thanks to Friends, the pit toilet int he southeast side of the lake which was rendered unusable due to a fallen tree was replaced.  Visitors who hike the lake trail and use Shelter 5 now have easy access to the new facility.

A great "thank you" to all those who have helped with these projects and others throughout the year.  If you would like to get involved, join this chapter for their regular monthly meetings. Volunteers can work on a group project or select a project or need to complete individually when your time allows.  To find out how to join Friends of Fort Mountain State Park please call the park at 706-422-1932.
