Friends of Magnolia Springs State Park and park staff hosted Heritage Days 2012 from December 7th through the 8th at Magnolia Springs State Park. Together, park staff and Members of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans presented various historical programs to youngsters from area schools. The Georgia Southern archaeological team was represented and a blacksmith demonstrated his talents to visitors.
Saturday, several vendors were also on site, selling their goods. The centerpiece display was the full-scale replica of the Confederate submarine, the H. L. Hunley. The original sub was sunk in Charleston Harbor near the end of the Civil War and attempts over the years to find it were unsuccessful until a few years ago. The original is now on permanent display in Charleston, South Carolina.
The replica, which is under the care of the H. L. Hunley Camp 143, Sons of Confederate Veterans based in Summerville, SC, was brought to the Park by the Buckhead-Camp Lawton Brigade 2102, SCV and the Friends of Magnolia Springs State Park.
Overall, the weekend of historical presentations and demonstrations was a great success, thanks to Friends, staff, and partners.
