Friends of Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites is pleased and proud to announce that after just a decade of establishment, they have reached their 20,000th membership.  As Friends memberships have multiplied in recent years, this organization has grown from twelve chapters to over fifty chapters dedicated to serving, promoting, and preserving Georgia's state parks and historic sites.  As Friends memberships grow, more individuals are reached and encouraged to serve Georgia's treasured resources through volunteer efforts.

A great congratulations is extended to Mike and Dolores Miller, who represent the Friends 20,000th membership.  The Miller's were invited on a weekend get-a-way by their daughter, son-in-law, Andy Fleming (Friends Executive Director), and his wife to tour several Georgia state parks and historic sites.  It was through this excursion that the Millers decided to become Friends members.

"In general, we are history buffs and enjoy seeing historical sites and also natural areas that have been preserved for their scenic beauty," said Mike Miller.  "We have been very much impressed with the parks we have visited in Georgia."

The Millers have enjoyed visiting Fort McAllister State Historic Park, Fort Morris State Historic Site, Howfyl-Broadfield Plantaion State Historic Site, The Garrison of Fort King George State Historic Site, and Wormsloe State Historic Site.  They have already begun planning their next trips including New Echota State Historic Site, Cloudland Canyon State Park, Chief Vann House State Historic Site, Amicalola Fall State Park, and Tallulah Gorge State Park.

During the 2011 fiscal year, Friends provided $2,189,500 in volunteer and direct programs and project support in Georgia state parks and historic sites.  Friends also contributed over $500,000 toward critical site improvement projects.

Friends memberships have given the Miller's, along with thousands of other Georgians, the opportunity to learn more about Georgia's great places and the value of the state park's system.  It is the dedication of our volunteers and Friends members that have made Friends such a successful organization.  With tremendous gratitude, Friends wishes to congratulate Mike and Dolores Miller, who represent Friends 20,000th membership, and to thank all of our Friends members over the years. Your generosity and support is making a difference throughout Georgia.
