Your State Parks Day 2014 at Chattahoochee Bend State Park was a great success! Twenty volunteers, including Representative Lynn Smith, reported to the visitor's center for breakfast, door prizes, and duty sign-up. Patti Lee won the grand prize, of a family Friends of Georgia State Parks membership. Volunteers then split into groups to beautify the front entrance and visitor's center with fall plants, do trail maintenance, and put up directional signs on the trails. Friends had hoped to begin our bridge 3 project, but were unable to get it started for this volunteer day. If you are interested in being a part of this bridge-building project, contact Friends of Chattahoochee Bend at http://bendfriend.org/. Speaking of volunteering, we have many opportunities for you to "Be The Legacy" at Chattahoochee Bend State Park. Chattahoochee Bend continues to be built by volunteers. Friends of Chattahoochee Bend rebuilding their "action teams". Now that Chattahoochee Bend is established, Friends is working on multiple projects simultaneously. Current volunteers cannot accomplish all the current needs. Friends has opportunities to showcase your talent, whatever it may be. If you like to research history, join our historical action team to build the history of the area. If you are a gardener, landscape artist, or horticulture enthusiast, Dave Smith could use your help on the botanical action team. He is working on a sensitive native habitat restoration project - it's exciting and showing great promise! If you want to help, but can't come on the weekend workdays, you can adopt a section of trail and upkeep it when you are available. Autumn is here, and the leaves are already falling. If you clear trails during the week, you may use a blower. The volunteer opportunities are endless, and rewarding. Being outside in the beauty of nature is the first reward, and seeing people enjoying the fruits of your labor is yet another. {article submitted by Jan Pierce; photo credit: Lori Lawson}
