Welcoming Spring at Hamburg

Hamburg-Birdhouses.jpg

Hamburg Outdoor Recreational Area in Mitchell, Georgia recently reopened for the year after closing for the winter months.  Troop 51, of the Washington County Girl Scouts was there to welcome the bluebirds back for another nesting season, campground hosts welcomed the campers and Friends of Hamburg welcomed all guests for another great year of recreational enjoyment.

Each year, Troop 51 Girl Scouts return to Hamburg to prepare each nesting box just in time for the bluebird scouts to arrive, looking for clean facilities to set up housekeeping.  Unfortunately, this year several boxes at Hamburg were in poor condition and in need of upgrades. Thank to Wayne Norris of Sandersville, Georgia and his passion for a strong Bluebird population, a generous supply of his handmade Bluebird nesting boxes were donated to replace old boxes and add to new locations.
Admired for their vibrant hue, bluebirds are a welcomed attraction to visitors of Hamburg. However, it’s not just their colors that make these creatures so fascinating. Bluebirds will build nest on top of nest until the box is no longer suitable or safe.  The hard work annually accomplished by Troop 51, along with the generosity of Mr. Norris, provides a great service to the park and the conservation and protection of these remarkable birds.

Once the nesting boxes were cleaned and ready, bluebirds immediately began claiming their new homes.

Whether you are a bluebird looking for the cleanest housing for miles around or you are a camper looking to enjoy a fantastic, friendly outdoor fishing & camping experience, Hamburg Outdoor Recreation Area is the perfect place.

Troop 51 Girl Scouts and Friends of Hamburg invite you to join them in their conservation and protection efforts while enjoying the park by keeping it clean from litter and participating in Leave No Trace practices. Thank you to all who are supporting Troup 51 through their cookie sales and all those who are supporting Friends of Hamburg! Your donations through talents and treasures are making a difference!

Special thanks to Mark Riner for contributing photos and article.
