This charming, stagecoach inn was once a wonderful place to stop for a restful night and a delicious morning breakfast. James R. Wyly built the inn circa 1815, choosing the excellent location along the newly constructed Unicoi Turnpike, a busy highway over the Appalachian Mountains. One customer stated, “Here I got an excellent breakfast of coffee, ham, chicken, good bread, butter, honey, and plenty of good new milk for a quarter of a dollar...What a charming country this would be to travel in, if one was sure of meeting with such nice clean quarters once a-day!” (English Geologist George W. Featherstonhaugh, 1837).
Take a trip to yesteryear and enjoy the historic charm of such a significant Georgia treasure. Celebrate these memories from ages past and join Friends as we serve you Breakfast on the Veranda at Traveler's Rest State Historic Site. Visit on April 22 and Friends will have hot pancakes ready for your breakfast on the lovely front porch. This all-you-can-eat meal will be offered from 8:30-10:30am ($4-$7). At 10:30, Dr. Bob Bouwman will give a talk on the research and writing of his recently re-published book, Traveler's Rest and the Tugaloo Crossroads and will be available after for a book signing.
We look forward to seeing you on the porch!
