patchSeptember 24, 2011 is National Public Lands Day and our third annual SAVE My State Parks Day!  Most chapters around the state will be holding volunteer service events, thank you events or special programs to celebrate SAVE Day and to help promote the importance of Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites.

What is National Public Lands Day?

Begun in 1994, National Public Lands Day was created as a day of service and celebration for our nation's public lands, including state parks.  The event has grown over the years from just 700 volunteers to a whopping 170,000 volunteers in 2010.  Friends of Georgia State Parks commemorates the day by sponsoring our statewide SAVE My State Parks Day to encourage volunteers and guests to give something back on or around the day.  In addition, we also use the opportunity to say thank you to the millions of visitors from local communities and beyond who support our state parks and historic sites year round.

What is going on?

The activities for SAVE My State Parks Day will vary from site to site.  Some chapters will be hosting a day of service with volunteer activities appropriate to all ages and abilities allowing guests the opportunity to give a little back and to help us preserve these important natural, cultural and historic resources.  Some chapters will be co-sponsoring park programs, special events and information sessions to help guests understand the importance of state parks and historic sites to the local community and to Georgia as a whole.

How can I get involved?

Special events are being coordinated and held at the local level.  To see what is going on at your favorite park on or around SAVE My State Parks Day, visit GeorgiaStateParks.org/events.  You can also visit the National Public Lands website for more information and other events going on throughout the state.

Can't make it?
