New Echota is one of the most significant Cherokee sites in the nation and holds a tragic yet important piece of American history worthy of preservation and remembrance. These historic outhouses and buildings are still beautifully intact (some original and some reconstructed) including the Council House, Court House, Print Shop, Missionary Samuel Worcester's home, an 1805 store, smoke houses, corn cribs and barns. Friends of New Echota and park staff need your help sharing the story of New Echota and keeping its memory alive. From helping preserve the buildings to giving tours to gardening, there is much to be done each week. Please come and join us Wednesdays through Saturdays from 9:00am - 4:00pm. Here are a few volunteer activities we have available for you:
- Historic Building cleaning; good ole fashion dusting, sweeping & mop work.
- Historic Furnishings and artifact cleaning.
- Nature trail- general light maintenance.
- Historic Building docent and guided tours; especially on Saturdays, but welcome every day.
- Site brochure/rack card distribution to area motels/hotels. Private vehicle use required.
- Cherokee Farmstead garden weeding
- Blue bird nesting box & wood duck nesting box monitor & cleaning/repair work
- Front counter/reception desk work; greeting visitors, starting film, stocking resale items on shelves, operating cash register and handling admission fee sales and retail sales-any day, Wednesday-Friday.
- Wash all walking path interpretive/education signage-done/needed weekly
We would love to welcome you to New Echota State Historic Site to preserve this American treasure. Any amount of donated time and service is welcome!
