Celebrate “Your State Parks Day” on September 27, 2014
Pack a picnic, grab your outdoor gear and load the car with friends and family. On Saturday, September 27, Georgia residents and visitors are invited to experience the state parks and historic sites by attending this year’s “Your State Parks Day.” Taking place in honor of National Public Lands Day, Friends of Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites is pleased to host the event and cover the cost of parking and admission at participating sites for the day.
The statewide event includes numerous volunteer projects and family-friendly programs. Florence Marina State Park in southwest Georgia will be hosting a river bank and nature trail cleanup conserving their land and waterways, Skidaway Island State Park will remove invasive species from the park, and Fort Yargo State Park near Atlanta will be working on the mountain bike and hiking trails, cleaning the lakeshore, and working on erosion sites. A complete list of events and volunteer projects can be found at GeorgiaStateParks.org/stateparks-day.
Visitors are also encouraged to participate in a volunteer project on “Your State Parks Day.” Family-friendly volunteer opportunities for all ages and abilities will be available at state parks and historic sites throughout the Georgia. Projects range from trail maintenance to planting gardens to to painting and clean up. View volunteer opportunities by state park or historic site here. Or, for all the ways you can get involved, try here. Additionally, volunteers will go home with a free T-shirt. There’s something for everyone!
By supporting our state parks and historic sites through volunteering, you help ensure that Georgia’s greatest treasures are preserved for years to come. Recent economic conditions have forced the parks to do more with less and rely on the support of the local community for routine upkeep and supplies. If you enjoy the state parks and appreciate the opportunity they provide to get active, explore nature, and spend time with loved ones, make this year’s “Your State Parks Day” the kick-off to regular volunteering at the parks. You can also assist financially by donating online or becoming a Friend with an annual membership.
